9th October 2015 - We are excited to announce that a new soft body node has been added to our Carbon Houdini Plug-in portfolio.
Carbon Tetra works with native Houdini tetrahedrons and has segment and volume constraints.
Also, by using signed volumes, we guarantee that no spontaneous tetrahedron inversions happen.
This means that Carbon Tetra can preserve shape and/or volume reliably.

The underlying physics structure parallelizes extremely well and allows for real-time (24Hz) simulations of geometries containing 300,000 tets.
The noodle bowl below is simulating at 7.68 million tets/sec. (and 10.6 million segments/sec.) in the Carbon test bed on Dual 14 core system.
(Note: Houdini overhead will slow that down in the plug-in).

Moreover, being a soft body, artists can take advantage of Carbon’s goal posing to art direct the Tet behavior they need, in the same way they goal pose Carbon Cloth.

The versatility and speed of Carbon Tetra makes them the perfect solution for skin layers, deformable bodies, shoe soles, ropes and certain types of plants. Read more about Carbon Tet applications  here.

2nd April 2015 - The next release of Carbon will include these cool features developed under our "Feasibility of real-time, high quality, simulation of real fabrics, in the Cloud" project. We developed these exciting technologies that support a smoother more fashion accurate work flow for fashion centric garment simulation. They include;

1) Tailored cloth model - the most sophisticated cloth model that Carbon has to offer and with the ability to define warp and weft directions, it supports features such as Anisotropy. It is recommended to always choose this model for garments that are created from flat panels.

2) Anisotropic properties - the introduction of the Tailored cloth model allows us to use the warp and weft directions to define anisotropic properties for the fabric.

3) Designed Garment import - the technology to import garments from virtual garment design tools and extract the original flat fabric panels alongside the pre-draped garment. This creates the ability to apply the correct pre-draped metrics for each individual panel.  In combination with the new Tailored cloth model, we not only guarantee the preservation of metrics, but also enable users to simulate anisotropic fabrics.

One of the most important advantages of Carbon over other cloth simulations is that we enforce Lagrangian limits and do not stretch garments indefinitely. This is invaluable for designers as they can now predict if a garment would fit an actual human being or not and if there are any problems during typical movements like a catwalk.

31st March 2015 - We just completed our Innovate UK supported project "Feasibility of real-time, high quality, simulation of real fabrics, in the Cloud". This project allowed us to conduct research as to how feasible it is to simulate (close-to) realistic fabrics. After running various experiments, background reading and talking to experts in this field, we can truly say that we have learned a lot. While real fabric and its behavior is defined by the individual yarns and the way they are woven, any simulation that aims to be close to real-time needs to work with abstractions, i.e. use a triangle mesh of reasonable resolution. We have learned that industry formats like KES-F or FAST cannot be directly used to set up a fabric simulation, but they do offer valuable information about the general behavior of a fabric.

1st October 2014 - We are excited to announce that we have partnered with Change of Paradigm and University of Surrey (Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing), to explore "Fabric based garment and structure design, selling and manufacture with zero prototyping", under the Innovate UK competition "Towards Zero Prototyping". Its an 18 month project that we are kicking off 1st October 2014. This project will allow us to further develop Carbon's capability for the Fashion market, following on from the work we did in our previous Innovate UK supported project "Feasibility of real-time, high quality, simulation of real fabrics, in the Cloud." We expect to develop cool new features that we can integrate into Carbon Cloth once the project completes.

Public description of the project. This project will carry out research to acquire the knowledge and skills required to simulate the behaviour and photorealistic visualization of fabric based garments and structures, in 3D real-time, to enable the design, selling and manufacturing of fabric products with zero physical prototypes. The innovation here is that no one today, anywhere in the world, is delivering high quality, 3D real-time fabric behaviour simulation and photorealistic visualisation matched to real fabric. This UK project team brings together the experience in simulation, photorealistic visualization, fabric and fashion, and computer vision to make this a reality. This technology would also enable new business models e.g. in the fashion industry garments could be offered to consumers prior to manufacture for try-on and outfit mixing, and personalisation e.g. fabrics, colours etc. before purchase. It would also encourage local manufacture-on-demand to meet shorter delivery times and support a revitalised UK fashion manufacturing economy. Other applications for virtual fabric prototypes matched to real fabric, include engineering and architecture, from tents, balloons to space based structures


1st September 2014 - We've been experimenting with simulating real fabric behavior as part of our TSB project and helped by that study we've abstracted the essence of simulated fabric behavior into a simpler UI for Carbon Cloth. This should make it easier for artists to get started with Carbon Cloth, while at the same time they can toggle between the simple and advanced UI with the parameters propagating between the two. 

13th August 2014 - Nate Yellig (Dreamworks)  gave a great talk earlier today on the work they did with our Carbon Cloth (Houdini Plug-in),

8th August 2014 - We are heading off to Siggraph. Looking forward to being in Vancouver again. If you are @ Siggraph be sure to attend Dreamworks' talk on Wednesday @ 4:45pm, where they will show some of the work they have been doing with Carbon Cloth, in "How To Train Your Dragon 2". There's some fun stuff in there.

9th June 2014 -  Great to see Nike’s “The Last Game” in the World Cup advertising roll. The Last Game was created by Passion Pictures using Carbon Cloth. When Passion couldn’t achieve what they wanted with their current cloth solution, they turned to Carbon.
